All of Calgary's NEWEST restaurants right in one place.
From the same people who brought you Lately, comes Chakalaka. Chakalaka took over the space previously occupied by 1410 on 17th Ave. Not only did Chakalaka redecorate they also completely gutted the basement and turned it into a "selfie room." So creative! In terms of food, you can expect tapa style items, hot plate with exotic meats, and an extensive globally inspired cocktail menu.
What happens when you take 3 of Calgary's heaviest hitters and put them in one location?! You get General Block in Bridgeland. This unique building features Una Pizza, Village Ice Cream and Phil and Sebastian coffee. Given the location and this awesome match-up of businesses, there's no way this place could not be successful.
You are probably familiar with the restaurants in the Starbelly group, which include The Beltliner, Pink Door Pizza, and Starbelly. They've added a new restaurant to their line up in McKenzie Towne. Calavera Cantina serves tacos, burritos, tostadas, small plates and churros. They also have a good selection of cocktails and margaritas.
The Halal Guys is an American fast food chain that are moving to several locations in Western Canada. One of those locations is 17th Ave. They serve sandwiches and platters with beef, chicken, or falafel. Apparently they are very popular in the U.S. it'll be exciting to see how they do in Canada.
You're familiar with the many restaurants who make up the Concorde Group (Bridgette Bar, National, Lulu Bar to name a few). Their latest addition is "Major Tom" which is located in downtown Calgary 40 floors up (700-2 St SW). While their instagram is empty, I think we can expect old school (1960's?) vibes with high end decor. I suspect this bar is designed with a corporate crowd in mind.
Royale has been closed for over a year now and finally it's to be replaced! Porch will take over this prime real estate on 17th Ave. I don't yet know much about Porch, but the pics look somewhat upscale, light colors with plants and an airy feel. I immediately got Orchard vibes when I saw the pics, but obviously a toned down version, so Orchard minus the chandeliers :D
...but only if you're up for some new Calgary food adventures
